2 Stroke Int’l Demonstrates Revolutionary New Diesel-fuel Jet Pump at Navy Invitational Symposium

Two Stroke International (2si) was invited by the United States DoD (Department of Defense) NBE (Non-gasoline Burning Engine) Steering Group to attend an NBE Industry Days Symposium at the Naval facility in Panama City, Florida.  2si was asked to demonstrate and give a presentation on their revolutionary-new-design diesel/gasoline multi-fuel two-cylinder water-cooled engine in a demonstration boat.  2si’s new engine and new Phase II jet pump performed like the biblical David in a field of giant corporations that included Bombardier from Canada, Mercury Marine, and others.  The military has a mandate called the “single fuel initiative” to keep gasoline off the battlefield front lines and ships.  The unique 2si family of lightweight diesel/gasoline engines is a perfect replacement for traditional lightweight gasoline engines in the military used in portable pumps, generators, steam cleaners, and other equipment.  2si designs and builds engines and pumps at their factory and corporate headquarters in Beaufort, SC.

The engineering team from 2si headed by President, J. W. (Joe) Stonebraker, installed the new 2si engine and jet combination in a demonstration boat on short notice for the demonstration in Panama City.   Nine members accompanied the boat as part of the presentation and demonstration team and to observe the demonstrations and equipment from other attendees.  According to 2si President Joe Stonebraker, “Our engine and pump performed flawlessly on the JP5 diesel fuel provided by the committee and the presentation was well received.  We are all well pleased with our performance and feel we thwarted any skepticism that may have existed.  There was lots of interest in our engines for many different applications.  We anticipate new business from various military functions as our engines offer a definite light weight solution to the “one fuel forward directive.”  We are structured for growth to respond to the military’s needs.”

A number of different company functions were represented at thesymposium by a

team of nine people from 2si.  Management representation included Howell C. (Nick) Jones, owner, and J. W. (Joe) Stonebraker, President.  Ron Headden, Dan Cook, RogerKlinck, Chris Brantley, and Reese Griffin represented the engineering and design functions.  Tammie Morris represented Quality Assurance and Al Mitchell represented manufacturing.

The new 2si engine that was used in the demonstration is a two-cylinder water-cooled variation of the one-cylinder fan-cooled engine that has been and is being supplied to the Marine Corps and the Navy.  It uses a patented direct injection process, called FAST technology for “Fully Atomized Stratified Turbulence.  It is licensed from Italian scooter and engine manufacturer Piaggio.  The engines utilize a miniature piston driven by the engine crankshaft to allow atomization of the injected fuel.  The low compression ratio of these engines is similar to gasoline engines, and a standard spark plug is used to ignite the fuel.   The engines do not use high compression for ignition like traditional diesels.  Therefore they do not require the strength and weight of traditional diesel engines.  The 2-stroke engines are designed to have the exhaust port completely closed before the fuel charge is injected into the cylinder, thereby reducing emissions typical of traditional two-strokes of raw fuel escaping the exhaust port before it is closed.

The new engine is coupled with a jet pump using a Solas high-performance impeller and pump body and a 2si supplied intake tunnel.  The complete one-piece unit eliminates installation alignment considerations for boat builders during their installation process.   This product is being designed into “soon to be marketed” boats such as custom tenders built in the United Kingdom by Williams Marine for use aboard Sealine yachts.

Two Stroke International was formed when AMW and Cuyuna merged at the end of 1994 as the AMW Cuyuna Engine Company, Inc.  The name Two Stroke International or 2si was later adopted.  The combined companies have targeted the lightweight high-performance niche in the engine marketplace including diesel/gasoline multi-fuel spark-ignited engines.  Engines, gearboxes, belt drives, jet pumps and other ancillary equipment are supplied for light aircraft, boats/PWCs, hovercraft, powered parachutes, military drones, transportable military equipment, portable generators and fire pumps, and other applications that require lightweight or portable power.
